They come from two different, mostly unspoken rulebooks about family, children and home. The way through is to make those rulebooks visible, decide the big questions together as a team, and agree a small number of rules you can both live with.

This guide covers the five issues I see most often in Italian–British couples: in-laws, family involvement, parenting styles, raising bilingual children and deciding where to settle.

A note before we start: everything below describes tendencies, not rules. Plenty of Italians are private and independent, and plenty of British families are very close. Use these ideas as questions to ask each other, not labels to put on each other.

Why Italian–British couples so often argue about the same things

Working with couples from two cultures, I see the same themes repeatedly. In many Italian families, closeness and involvement are signs of love: parents are consulted on big decisions, Sunday lunch matters and grandparents play an active role. In many British families, love is often shown by giving each other space, and privacy, independence and not interfering are the polite default.

Neither is wrong. The trouble starts when each partner reads the other’s family through their own rulebook. An Italian mother who phones every day may be showing care, while her British daughter-in-law experiences it as pressure. A British partner who keeps a respectful distance may be showing consideration, while the Italian family reads it as coldness. The first step is always to translate the intention behind the behaviour.

How do you handle in-laws from a different culture as a couple?

Agree between the two of you first, and then let each partner speak to their own family. That one principle prevents most in-law conflict in mixed-culture couples.

Explain what “family” means to each of you. Ask each other what a good relationship with parents looks like, how often you would see them, and what you would expect from them in a crisis.

Translate the behaviour. Ask what the other person’s family means by it. A daily phone call may mean “we love you and we miss you”, not “we don’t trust you to cope”.

Agree your boundaries in private. Decide together about visit frequency, phone calls, unannounced visits and advice about money or children.

Your family, your conversation. The partner whose family it is should raise any difficult topic with them, kindly and clearly. It lands better, and it protects the relationship between the other partner and the in-laws.

Stay united in public. You can disagree in private, but in front of family, you speak as a team.

Language matters here too. If conversations at the table switch into Italian, the partner who doesn’t speak it can feel invisible. Agree that when everyone is together, the main conversation runs in a language all of you can follow, and that the Italian-speaking partner will fill in the gaps.

What if my partner’s Italian family is too involved in our relationship?

Family involvement becomes a problem when relatives start taking part in decisions that belong to the couple: money, housing, children, how you spend holidays, or whether you should be doing things differently. Closeness is often meant as support, but support stops being support when one partner feels watched, judged or outvoted.

What helps:

Name the pattern, not the people. “We would like to make this decision ourselves” is easier to hear than “your mother interferes”.

Decide which decisions are yours. Where you live, how you raise your children and how you spend your money are common candidates. A safety note: if pressure from relatives or from a partner involves threats, control over money or movement, or fear, that is more than a cultural difference, and the first step is specialist support rather than couples therapy.

How do you manage different parenting styles between an Italian and a British partner?

Agree on values first and rules second. Most parenting disagreements in mixed-culture couples are really disagreements about what a good childhood looks like, and it is much easier to negotiate values than to argue about bedtimes.

Common differences include how early children are encouraged to be independent, mealtimes and food, bedtime routines, how strict discipline should be, how much children take part in adult conversations, the role of grandparents, and attitudes to school and achievement.

A simple process:

List your top three. Each of you writes down the three things that matter most to you as a parent and why.

Ask whether it’s cultural or just habit. Often what feels like “the Italian way” or “the British way” is simply how your own parents did it.

Look for both/and. You can have long family Sunday lunches and encourage independent play.

Fix your non-negotiables. Agree on the few rules that matter to both of you and keep the rest flexible.

Disagree in private. In front of the children, you are a team.

Review it every six months. Children’s needs change, and so will your answers.

How can you raise bilingual children when parents disagree on language?

Choose a simple, consistent pattern together and treat it as a shared family project, not a contest between languages. It is a common worry that two languages might confuse a child. In general, children are well able to grow up with more than one language, and consistency matters more than the exact method.

Patterns many families use:

One parent, one language. Each parent speaks their own language to the child.

Minority language at home. Italian at home, with English outside the home (nursery, school, friends).

Time and place. For example, Italian at weekends and on calls with grandparents, English during the week.

No pattern is the correct one. What matters is that it is realistic for your household and that both of you feel it is fair.

There is also an emotional layer. For the Italian parent, language is often about identity and connection to their own family. For the English-speaking partner, it can feel like being left out of their own home. Both feelings are valid. Agree in advance how shared moments will work, for example, family dinners in a language everyone understands, and a promise that nobody is talked about in a language they can’t follow. Grandparents can help enormously with Italian, through video calls, visits and summers in Italy.

What if deciding where to settle long-term is causing conflict?

Treat it as a decision about what each of you needs, rather than a vote between two countries. When couples argue about Italy versus the UK, the real conversation is usually about family, work, belonging, money, language and the feeling that one person has given up more than the other.

Separate places from needs. Each of you writes your top five needs, such as being near family, career opportunities, speaking your own language, financial security and a sense of belonging.

Ask what each place gives and costs. Include the less obvious things: friendships, being understood in your own language, ageing parents and your partner’s career.

Look beyond yes or no. Options include a time-limited decision (stay three years, then review), splitting your time, or deciding around milestones such as a child starting school or a parent’s health.

Notice who has already carried the most. The partner who moved countries often gives up more than is visible.

Decide, and set a review date. A decision you can revisit feels much safer than one that feels permanent.

Practical questions such as residency status or school systems need accurate, current information from official sources, so don’t let guesswork drive an emotional decision.

When does it help to see a couples therapist?

It helps when the same argument keeps coming back, when one of you feels like an outsider in the other’s family or country, when family has become the main topic of conflict, or when one of you has stopped raising the subject to keep the peace.

Working with a therapist who speaks both Italian and English means each of you can speak in the language where you feel most yourself, Italian, English or a mix, without one partner translating for the other.
